FSP 2016 Training Camp In Re-Cap

After a long 72 - hour weekend the FSP 7on7 Select squad concluded their official training camp yesterday morning. With the defense dominating the majority of camp throughout the weekend. One question that was yet to be answered coming into training camp was; “How does FSP replace the countries top signal caller in Georgia Commit Jacob Eason?”

FSP entered training camp officially with five quarterbacks on their roster. Lead by the lone returner; sophomore Hunter Wendling (Stadium HS). Also reporting was Sophomore Zach Lewis (Eastside Catholic HS), Junior Willie Patterson (Franklin Peirce HS), Junior Colton Padgett (Eastlake HS), and Freshman Ayden Ziomas (Glacier Peak HS).

After three days of competition Freshman Ayden Ziomas separated himself from the pack

earning the nod as the number one QB coming into Winter league play. Ayden completed 61% of his passes going 32-52; 10TDs with only 1 INT.

"He just continued to make plays and make good decisions. He does not shy away from competition and doesn't turn the ball over which is huge in 7on7."

- Tracy Ford CEO of Ford Sports Performance.

Offensive standouts

Willie Patterson: By far the biggest surprise of training camp, despite coming in the most proven statistical quarterback having thrown for over 3,000 yards and 30 touchdowns last fall. Willie blossomed from the slot position, with Jr. Max Novak going down early and 4 Star TE Hunter Bryant not reporting to camp on time (due to basketball). Willie seized the opportunity making his presence felt and was phenomenal catching the football, recording 13 touchdowns over the weekend.

Joey Sinclair: Another player that used his versatility to earn a roster spot this weekend. Joey who is the starting quarterback at Lincoln HS (Tacoma) got an invite to training camp after having an exceptional tryout making plays as a Safety. After the AM practice Joey got his shot to play offense, as a QB he completed balls, but with more of a need at WR he proved that he was dynamic playmaker. Sinclair had a sensational 1on1 period then backed it up with a great performance in team sessions. Joey made it very clear to the coaching staff that he was a playmaker that had a knack for making things happen.

Daniel Johnson: The 6-4 WR from Mountlake Terrace proved that he had the skill set to be that big outside receiver that FSP was searching for. Listed as one of our top ranked "Athletes" Daniel displayed his ability to take the ball out of the air against elite competition. Johnson’s highlight of the camp came when he went up over 4 Star Athlete Salvon Ahmed in the redzone for a touchdown in the first am practice.

Hunter Bryant: Was as real as advertised, reporting late to camp due to basketball conflicts. Bryant proved why he is ranked as one of the top players in the country. Hunter scored 4 touchdowns on Sunday's final practice, highlighted with an acrobatic jump ball for a touchdown thrown by his HS teammate quarterback Zach Lewis.

Defensively this is hands down the most talented secondary you will see in the Northwest. Lead by Junior Defensive Backs Salvon Ahmed (Juanita), Connor Wedington (Sumner ), and Bradley Kim (Skyline). This secondary gave the FSP offense problems all weekend playing with a lot of swagger and confidence.

"The DB's on this team can match up with any of the top 7v7 teams in the country. This group listens and takes coaching very well. Our linebackers are big and athletic enough to re-route defenders and make the job easy in the back end."

- FSP Defensive coordinator Darrin Harris.

Defensive Standouts

Connor Wedington: Connor separated himself from the pack of talented defensive backs present at training camp this past weekend. He was hands down the best DB in camp making numerous plays all weekend, including three interceptions in the final scrimmage. Solidifying him as the starting corner for the FSP top team. His size (6-1 185), speed and overall athleticism make him an intriguing prospect.

Salvon Ahmed: The four star athlete did not disappoint this weekend, was rarely tested throughout the 3 day camp. When the balls did come his way he rose to the occasion. Looked very good in 1on1 sessions and team periods with all his defensive checks. Ahmed was also used as a WR on the offensive side of the ball recording a touchdown on a vertical route in the first AM practice.

Anfernee Gurley: Very talented athlete that ran with the 1st team defense all weekend at the Nickel position. Was very impressive in the 1on1 sessions and rarely had balls caught on him. Recorded a pick 6 in the Saturday’s night practice. Although he did not finish practice Sunday due to an ankle injury Gurley had an outstanding performance all weekend. Doing enough to hold down the starting nickel spot heading into the alumni game next weekend.

Ira Branch: Physical corner who excelled in bump and run coverage. Was extremely active at the

line of scrimmage making a lot of plays on the ball all weekend. Showed a lot of versatility through out camp, and also got reps at Safety.

Darreon Moore: Made the three hour trip up to Seattle from the Tri Cities to compete for a spot on team FSP. Displayed great instincts all weekend and proved he belonged at training camp competing against the top athletes from the Westside of the state. Was challenged four consecutive plays late in the scrimmage Sunday by 6-4 WR Daniel Johnson and held his own against a bigger Receiver in the redzone.

Overall Thoughts

There was a lot of doubt surrounding the talent level in the state of Wahington. Those questions turned into exclamation points this weekend at training camp. FSP loses 9 players from last years team that will end up signing with a FBS or FCS schools in February. This weekend answered a lot of questions reducing any doubt that FSP will not be able to re-loud and make another splash nationally this winter/spring. With quarterback being a primary position in 7v7 losing the No.1 QB in the country makes the exceptions of this years quarterback extremely high.

"Ayden won the job this weekend, and will be our starter coming into Winter League play but will be pushed by the three other QB's on the roster. This position will remain an open competition up until National Play in March."

- Tracy Ford.

The defense will be this years teams strong point, and will have to make a lot of stops to help out the young QBs on this roster. Defensively this team is loaded and will potentially have 12 guys that will play ball at the FCS or FBS level next year.

Final Quarterback Battle Statistics

  1. Ayden Ziomas: 32- 52; 10TD’s INT (61%)

  2. Colton Pagget: 36- 66; 8 TD’s 2 INTs (54%)

  3. Zach Lewis: 29-58; 7 TD’s; 5 INTs (50%)

  4. Hunter WWendling 16-36; 3 TD’s 4 INTs (44%) [endif]--
